The Gardens is located in zip code 79701. The neighborhood is located just north of the Village Shopping Center and just west of Midland Memorial Hospital, although a portion of the hospital actually sits in the area. The boundaries of the neighborhood are North Garfield Street and Midland Memorial Hospital to the east, West Kansas Avenue, and West Louisiana Avenue to the north, West Illinois Avenue, and West Ohio Avenue to the south, and Crestview Road to the west.
The area is a densely populated one with some single-family homes and a lot of apartment buildings and complexes. There are also commercial buildings in the area. Some of the apartments and single-family homes have grassy areas, and there are some evergreen trees and bushes that are scattered throughout the entire neighborhood. Actual green space is limited because the climate is best suited to Xeriscaping, a method of landscaping used in dry areas that keeps water usage to a minimum.
Gardens is located a reasonably short distance from the boyhood home of Former President George W. Bush. The former president’s small home has been recreated and allowed to remain as it would have been when the Bush family lived there between 1951 and 1955. None of the administrative offices or information desks are located in the home proper. Other properties in the neighborhood were purchased to be used for those purposes.
The Permian Basin Petroleum Museum was founded in 1975 by George Abell. The museum tells the story of petroleum workers who struggled to make a better life for themselves and their families. The Permian Basin Petroleum Pioneers was organized in 1959 as a result of the rapid growth of Midland’s oil and gas business. It was an association that was organized as a way to honor, recognize, and entertain the Permian Basin Petroleum Pioneers.
