The Emerson Heights neighborhood sits in zip code 79705. The boundaries of the community are North Midkiff Road to the west; Meadowbrook Drive, Emerson Place, and Emerson Lane to the north; Ward Street to the east; and Haynes Drive and Moss Avenue to the south. It borders the Kiwanis Park.
The very densely populated Texas neighborhood is made up of single-family homes that are packed very close to one another. Properties have a minimal amount of green space, and there are lush evergreen trees throughout the neighborhood.
Midland Park Mall is just across from the far northwestern border of the neighborhood. It is anchored by stores such as Dillards and Sears. Kiwanis Park is a very small strip of park with a large grassy area and a few trees. There is a small athletic court at the far eastern edge of the park.
The Museum of the Southwest is home to Midland’s Art Museum. It boasts a collection of more than 12,000 works of art, including sculpture, contemporary Southwestern art, early Southwestern art, and rare Native American art and artifacts. The museum also hosts as many as 10 exhibitions each year, including those that feature painting, pottery, and sculpture by local and international artists.
The Children’s Museum, located within the Museum of the Southwest, has art classes for kids. Each class has no more than 10 students. The Art School is held during the school year and is open to children in grades pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.
Blakemore Planetarium is also part of the Museum of the Southwest. It is in the process of getting its first permanent space science exhibit, which is being built and designed by Atlanta’s Malone Design. In the main exhibit gallery, visitors encounter an area full of black-lit graphics with images from the Hubble Telescope.
