The Dunagan neighborhood was named for Midland native John Conrad Duncan, a businessmen and philanthropist who was, at one time, president of the Texas State Historical Association, the Texas Folklore Society, as well as chairman of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. The neighborhood is just west of the downtown core and one of the more established in Midland.
Single-family homes make up the majority of the housing, some dating back to before 1940. New housing has been added over the years with developments from the mid-1990s, adding a greater assortment of apartments in a combination of low- and high-rise structures. Cowden Park, known for its baseball diamond and an overabundance of frogs after a good rain, is on the western edge of Dunagan. Former President George W. Bush has been particularly fond of this park.
A number of schools are nearby, including Houston Elementary School on West Louisiana Avenue, Eagle Academy of Midland on West Illinois Avenue, and Midland High School, the oldest in the city, also on West Illinois Avenue. Several churches are within walking distance, such as the First Baptist Church on West Louisiana Avenue and the Calvary Christian Fellowship on Ward Street. St. Ann’s Catholic Church and adjacent school are south of Dunagan on West Texas Avenue.
Several restaurants along the Andrews Highway are within walking distance including Quiznos, Subway, Schlotzky’s Deli, Whataburger, and Pizza Hut. The Midland Memorial Hospital and the Village Shopping Center are eight blocks south of Dunagan at the corner of West Illinois Avenue and Andrews Highway.
