Guide to

Midland

Midland, TX Apartments for Rent

The lone cowboy and his horse, cattle grazing in an open field, and oil — Texas embodies the stuff movies are made of, and Midland is no exception. And sure, there are the saloons and honky-tonks, cacti and tumbleweed, and plenty of cowboy boots and ten-gallon hats, but Midland is a fast-growing West Texas city with a decidedly upscale side. You’ll find it in the smooth piano bars, chic restaurants, and cultured museums.

Downtown Midland is an exciting area featuring theaters, shops, and restaurants. Referred to as the “Tall City,” the downtown skyline is impressive with buildings such as the 22-story Wilco Building and the 24-story Bank of America Building.

Sandwiched between Dallas and El Paso on I-20, Midland is a hub of the petroleum industry and home to the Midland International Airport. You’re sure to find plenty of excitement and opportunity once you’ve selected your apartment in Midland!

Things to Do in Midland:

Don’t let the cowboy culture fool you – Midland is rich with art and culture! Visit the Allison Fine Arts Auditorium at Midland College to see the beautiful McCormick Art Gallery, see a show at Live on Stage!, or enjoy an evening at the Midland Festival Ballet. Be sure to catch a Broadway show or live show at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center, and marvel at the world’s largest collection of WWII Aviation Nose Art at the CAF Airpower Museum.

The historic Yucca Theater in downtown Midland is the only place to see the Summer Mummers! This theatrical organization is very unique – it is a melodrama, meaning it is filled with laughter and bedlam! This is the oldest theatrical organization of its kind in the US, and it will quickly become your favorite evening out.

Of course, this is Texas, so there are some places to add to your must-do list (especially if this will be your first time living in Texas). After choosing your Midland apartment, be sure to visit the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum to see the antique oil drilling equipment. Then head over to the Haley Library and History Center to see the first bell to hang at the Alamo.

Midland was established in 1881 and has some unique historic sites. The oldest home in Midland is the Brown-Dorsey Medallion Home, built in 1899. It is a beautiful house museum with furnishings from the 1800s and beautiful glass windows. Another historic site that’s not quite as old is the George W. Bush Childhood Home. The Scarborough/Linebery House was built in 1907 and is a classic example of the ranch-style home preferred by early Texas cattlemen. It is open by appointment for tours, functions, dinner parties, and weddings.

With the wide-open skies of West Texas right above you, be sure to visit the Blakemore Planetarium. It features the state-of-the-art Spitz SciDome Projector as well as permanent exhibits. If seeing the stars inspires you to explore nature, be sure to spend some time at the I-20 Wildlife Preserve, a 99-acre preserve with 3.4 miles of hiking trails, a hawk observation tower, butterfly gardens, and a boardwalk.

What to Consider When Moving to Midland:

Midland is the administrative center for the Permian Basin, the petroleum-producing region of Texas. About 20 percent of the US gas reserves and oil are located here, providing a wealth of job opportunities. Midland has one of the nation’s lowest unemployment rates (the lowest in the US in 2014). Major employers include Warren Equipment Companies, Dawson Geophysical, Patterson Drilling UTI, Key Energy Services, and Midland College.

Midland is a fast-growing city. It offers many parks, a terrific downtown, and plenty to see and do. Several events and festivals are held throughout the year, including the annual Scottish-Irish Faire, the Celebration of the Arts at Centennial Plaza, Crude Fest, and the Mex-Tex Family Fiesta.

Why Midland Apartments Are Hot:

With one of the country’s lowest unemployment rates and an excellent location between Dallas and El Paso, not to mention its warm climate and low crime rate, Midland is growing fast for good reason. Add in exciting nightlife, great food, excellent shopping, and friendly neighbors, and apartments in Midland are being snapped up fast. Be sure to get yours – and don’t forget your cowboy boots!
