Living in Grand Beach is truly living on the beach. Located on the sparsely populated eastern tip of Galveston Island, this is a neighborhood of high rise condos fronted by palm trees meticulously marching along strips of white sand. To the south is the Gulf of Mexico. On the north, Grand Beach is framed by open marshland that is home to both resident and migratory birds.
East Beach Drive is the main road; the others are side streets leading from one condo to the next. East Beach Drive connects to Seawall Boulevard. In spite of the apparent isolation, Grand Beach is no more than a few minutes drive from shops, restaurants, theaters, and city life. At the western end of Grand Beach are the University of Texas Medical College and the Lindale Little League Park.
Grand Beach is pedestrian-friendly and most of that walking will be along the sandy beach, or along the marshlands. In the busy summer season, the beach may be a bit crowded, not only from visitors to Galveston in general, but from the time-share owners that flock to the area for vacation. The last two weeks of December are also popular with folks wanting to experience Christmas Charles Dickens-style, down to the buttered rum, roasted chestnuts, bayberry candles, and street carolers.
For those who live in Grand Beach year round, the closest schools are Rosenberg Elementary, Austin Middle School, and Kitwin High, all west of 2nd Avenue. Houses of worship are also in town, with the closest being the University Baptist Church and St Luke Church. Following the beach west, on foot of course, leads to the shops and restaurants along Seawall Boulevard.
