Central City is a Galveston, Texas neighborhood. Boundaries of this neighborhood are Stewart Road, 69th Street, Seawall Boulevard and 57th Street. Central City is on the shores of Galveston Bay.
This neighborhood has smaller pockets of residential areas scattered about, mostly around its exterior roads. Greens Bayou is one of the reasons for this, with its elongated shape stretching through about half of this neighborhood.
Another reason is that a number of cemeteries occupy a large part of the interior of Central City. Calvary Cemetery, Greek Orthodox Cemetery, Beth Jacob Cemetery, Municipal Cemetery and Lakeview Cemetery all reside here. These cemeteries hold an abundance of history. Some claim them to be haunted, so ghost tours are not uncommon here.
In the center of Central City is Galveston Place. This gives area residents a centralized place for shopping, offering department stores, groceries, a quick bite to eat, and more.
The area along Seawall Boulevard is primarily occupied by businesses, as is much of the rest of this neighborhood. Hotels and motels are prevalent along this stretch, with condo rentals also available.
The 61st Street Fishing Pier is also in this vicinity. Here, the tackle shop rents and sells equipment, for those who’d like to fish here but don’t have their own equipment. Others bring their own tackle and fish just the same. Still more come just to watch, and others come to enjoy some snacks – and maybe even a cold beer or a margarita, with a wide open ocean view.
Walking, swimming, windsurfing, and sailing are some of the other activities enjoyed here.
