The area was first called Lone Elm, but eventually the name was changed to Brooklyn. It remained a small village until the Pacific Railroad came through, which caused the village to grow rapidly. John Wein Forney, the director of the Texas and Pacific Railroad Company, was credited for bringing the railroad into Brooklyn, and the town was renamed in his honor.
