Tejas is a small, triangular-shaped neighborhood south of Interstate 10 near the entrance to the El Paso International Airport. It is part residential, part commercial, and it is one of El Paso’s oldest neighborhoods. Family homes from the 1940s and 1950s share space with apartments built during the 1970s and 1980s. Gateway Boulevard West to the north along Interstate 10 is the commercial zone, home to big name hotels, such as the Hyatt Place El Paso Airport, and Embassy Suites El Paso. North of Gateway Boulevard West is the Costco El Paso, Office Depot, and Game Stop.
On the northwestern tip is San Juan Park, a bit of open green space with a tennis court, two basketball courts, shaded picnic tables, and a grassy play area. Across from the park’s north end is the Hawkins Elementary School on Stephenson Avenue. Jefferson High School on Alameda Avenue is less than two miles west of Tejas. Towards the eastern end of Tejas is the St. Pius X School and Catholic Church on Geronimo Drive. Holy Light Church of God is on Trowbridge Drive, on the northwestern end.
Tejas does have two neighborhood eateries, La Milpa Tortillas and Poncho’s Gorditas, both off of North Clark Drive. Most of the restaurants are along Interstate 10 and include Gateway Café Express, IHop, El Nido, and Denny’s. More eateries and shops are at the Cielo Vista Mall, two miles east via Interstate 10. The mall offers big brand stores like Macy’s and Sears, as well as the Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and Hooters Restaurants. Fast food choices are available at the mall’s food court, which offers everything from burgers to Chinese food. El Paso’s Transit System services Tejas and also uses the mall as a major transfer point.
