The Sunrise Acres East residential area sits north of El Paso and west of the Fort Bliss Army Base, Biggs Army Airfield, and the El Paso International Airport. The neighborhood is bounded on the west by the Patriot Freeway, on the north by Hercules Avenue, on the east by Diana Drive, and on the south by Apollo Avenue. Children can attend Park Elementary, Canyon Hills Middle, and Chapin High School. The nearby Mountain View Park is a six-acre site with a recreation hall, a playground, and picnic tables.
The University of Texas at El Paso lies southwest of Sunrise Acres East. This public university offers a variety of degree programs, including 81 undergraduate degrees, 65 master’s degrees, and 16 doctoral degrees. The school has a long history in the community, which dates back to its original establishment, as an institution to study mining and metallurgy.
Local stores include the Jehil Grocery & Gift Store, Good Time Stores, and WIO Market, all of which are located within walking distance of the neighborhood down Dyer Street. Further, a Walmart Supercenter sits four miles north of Sunrise Acres East off of the Patriot Freeway, and the Bassett Place Mall sits eight miles southeast of Sun Rise Acres on Interstate 10. Bassett Place offers over 80 retail, service, and restaurant outlets. Anchor stores include Target, Kohl’s, and Costco, as well as the Premiere Cinemas 18 and a children’s play area.
Sun Rise Acres families can view over 220 animal species at the 35-acre El Paso Zoo. The zoo lies south of Sun Rise Acres off of State Route 54 on East Paisano. A variety of habitats house the zoo’s mammals, reptiles, invertebrates, and fish. Special exhibits include an Elephant Complex, Forest Atrium, Reptile House, and Birds of Prey.
