Sunland Park North is a community for those who love to shop. Located just east of Interstate 10 in north El Paso, this neighborhood is home to a collection of single-family homes and apartments. The southern tip is home to Sunland Park Mall offering two levels of department stores, specialty shops, and restaurants. Sears and Macy’s share space with Victoria’s Secret, the Gap, and Cleopatra’s Perfumes. Surrounding the mall, at the intersection of Sunland Park Drive and South Mesa Hills Drive are big-name mega stores, including Best Buy, Kmart, Party City, Target, and Toys R Us.
The residential part of Sunland Park North was developed beginning in the 1940s. Homes dating back to this era are, for the most part, the single-family structures. A large push in development during the 1970s through the 1990s added most of the apartments to the mix. The neighborhood is artsy, sophisticated, and pedestrian friendly. The El Paso transit system services Sunland Park North and uses the mall as a main transfer point.
Putnam Elementary School on Fiesta Drive is on the northern end of Sunland Park North, and Coronado High School on Cloudview Drive is just over that northern border. Johnson Elementary School off of South Mesa Hills Drive is another option on the southern end. Houses of worship include the El Paso District United Methodist Church on Belton Road, the Westside Church of Christ on Crestmont Drive, and Temple Beth Israel on Sunland Park Drive. Two small parks are in the neighborhood, the Paul Harvey Park off of De Leon Drive, and HT Ponsford Park on South Mesa Hills Drive.
