The neighborhood of Polk and the Polk Elementary School in north El Paso were named for Hibbard G. Polk. This man was an educator, principal, and finally, Deputy Superintendent of the El Paso School District. The Polk area is a family-oriented neighborhood just east of North Mesa Street, where the terrain just starts getting a bit hilly. The Franklin Mountains are only two miles to the east. Polk is four blocks north of the Irwin J. Lambka Park, used for local Little League baseball games.
Polk is a combination of single-family homes, townhomes, duplexes, and apartment complexes. It is pedestrian friendly and has frequent service from the El Paso bus system along the perimeter roads, Westwind Drive, Escondido Drive, Belvedere Street, and North Resler Drive. Westwind Drive turns into Shadow Mountain Drive and leads to the Coronado Shopping Center, home of Walgreens, Big 8 Markets, and an assortment of restaurants and services. Closer to home, Andre’s Pizza and Mi Terra Restaurant, both on Westwind Drive, are within walking distance. Additional shops, restaurants and services are located along North Mesa Street.
In addition to Polk Elementary, La Escuela Montessori School is on Westwind Drive on the northern edge. Coronado High School, one of the largest secondary schools in El Paso is to the south next to Lambka Park. A bit closer on Escondido Drive is Franklin High School. Hornedo Middle School on East Redd Road is to the north. Westway Baptist Church on East Redd Road, University Presbyterian Church off North Resler Drive, and Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church on Orizaba Avenue are all nearby.
