With the brilliant blue Texas sky as a backdrop, Mountain Ridge is set in a secluded area in north El Paso. The neighborhood has little development around it, and Tom Mays Park is just to the west of Mountain Ridge. Houses are built close together, but the stunning views from the neighborhood’s sidewalks give Mountain Ridge a feeling of openness. On clear nights, the lack of city light makes for excellent stargazing.
Mountain Ridge is in ZIP code 79904, and the neighborhood entrance is on Mountain Ridge Drive off Alabama Street. Highway 54, a direct route to neighboring Juarez, Mexico, is to the east of the neighborhood.
El Paso is known for its blended culture and natural beauty, and Mountain Ridge residents enjoy one of the city’s biggest public parks practically in its backyard. A popular hike through the center of the park travels through the area’s unique desert mountains, covered with cacti and sparse vegetation. The park also has five camping sites, wildlife viewing areas, and caves.
Fort Bliss, one of El Paso’s biggest employers and one of the largest military bases in the U.S., is just north of Mountain Ridge. A huge influx of soldiers from the 1st Armored Division in the past few years has led to a house and school building boom in El Paso, as now about 35,000 troops are stationed there.
Sports fans in El Paso enjoy cheering on the Miners of University of Texas-El Paso, which is 20 minutes away from Mountain Ridge. The university was the first in the southern U.S. to integrate its sports programs. The school’s popular football team plays at Sun Bowl Stadium, which seats 52,000, and also hosts the annual Texas vs. The Nation all-star college football game.
