Montoya Heights, El Paso is located in the west central section of the city. This is an area where new construction is occurring. Small businesses are mixed into this largely residential area. It is bounded on the east by Interstate 10, extends west on Montoya Lane, then south on State Route 20, to west on Medano Drive. This area is close to services, schools, and shopping. The Sunland Park Mall is nearby.
Residents will enjoy Ascarate Park, El Paso’s largest recreational park. The 448 acres of the park, located south of the city include a public golf course with plush wide fairways. It is a great, reasonably priced course where families can play. The park has picnic shelters, tables, and 2 playgrounds. There is a lake in the park, as well as the Western Playland Amusement Park.
El Paso Zoo welcomes families with fun and educational activities at the 18 acre site. Over 220 species of animals, including rare and endangered species, call this facility home. The zoo has carefully constructed natural habitats for various groups of mammals, reptiles, fish and invertebrates in the facility. Some of these include the South American Pavilion, America’s Aviary, and Birds of Prey, Forest Atrium, Asian Grasslands, Elephant Complex and Passport to Africa. The zoo also has a carousel, food, and gift shops.
Montoya residents who enjoy history, especially of the American Indians in this country, can visit The Old Spanish Mission, built in 1690. Located southeast of the city on Yaya Avenue, it is a 15 mile drive from the Montoya neighborhood. This is the oldest community in Texas. It has been preserved as a museum and is operated by the Tigua Indians. The rich culture of pottery designs, as well as tribal arts of the Tigua tribe, is on display.
