Mission Hills South is a neighborhood on the north side of El Paso, Texas, about three miles from the heart of the downtown area. This large, primarily residential community is bounded by North Mesa Street and TX Highway 20 on the west; Brentwood Avenue, North Stanton Street, and Okeefe Drive on the north; and Mesita Drive on the south. North Stanton Street traverses the middle of the neighborhood from north to south, bisected by La Cruz Drive on the south. The zip code for this El Paso County community is 79902.
More than 100 single-family homes can be found in this sparsely landscaped community, but some commercial offerings are situated within neighborhood bounds as well, especially along Highway 20. The center of the community is host to Mission Hills Park, which offers a walking path, tennis court, basketball court, picnic area, playground, and open green space for kids to run and play. Just outside of neighborhood bounds on the south is the Mesita Elementary School, situated on North Stanton, easily within walking distance.
Probably the most significant attraction near the Mission Hills South neighborhood is the University of Texas – El Paso (UTEP) campus, located within walking distance to the south, along Highway 20. This multicultural campus serves at least 22,000 students annually, and UTEP is considered one of the top research universities of its kind in the nation. Founded in 1914, the university offers 17 doctoral degrees, 81 master’s programs, and 81 bachelor’s degrees.
In addition to the Mission Hills Park, residents of this community enjoy close proximity to a variety of outdoor attractions. Several additional neighborhood parks are within walking distance of this community, as are larger Arroyo Park and Tom Lea Park. To the north of Mission Hills South, adjacent to the Castner Range – Fort Bliss Military Reservation, is a vast expanse of parkland known as Tom Mays Park.
