The Hospital District is a neighborhood in Irving and is located roughly 10 miles from Dallas. The boundaries of the neighborhood are Airport Freeway and State Highway 183 to the north, MacArthur to the west, and O’Connor to the east. The community is located just east of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. It is next to the Baylor Medical Center at Irving, so the neighborhood is appropriately named.
The neighborhood consists of scenic tree-lined streets with homes of varying styles and sizes. There are some colonials, some Cape Cods, and some custom-built homes. Many of the residences were built in the early 1960s, mainly between 1961 and 1964. Some are single-story homes, while others are two-story dwellings.
As is typical in Texas, outdoor living is an important part of life, and many of the homes in the neighborhood have attractively landscaped backyards. At least one has been designated as a Texas Wildscape Backyard Wildlife Habitat.
Among the great attractions in Irving is Campión Trails, which, though still a work in progress, is part of a master plan that will connect 22 miles of walking and jogging trails. At present, five miles of the northern section and two miles of the southern section are open for use by Hospital District residents.
The Irving Arts Center is a 10-acre complex that is located in the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. It was designed to accommodate all sorts of civic and cultural needs. It has a total of 91,500 square feet of performing and visual arts space. Four gallery areas feature more than 20 exhibitions each year.
The Sculpture Garden was designed by Dallas architect Mahlon Perry. One of its most impressive works is the Irving Centennial Mural, which was created by Francisco Mendoza and some of the youth of Irving.
