The Over Place Area is located just to the south and west of Original Town South. It lies in ZIP code 79605, and the boundaries are South 14th Street to the north, South 27th Street to the south, Barrow Street to the west, and Jeanette Street to the East.
This neighborhood is predominantly a residential area, and it is where McMurry University is located. The Abilene Post Office is also in this area. McMurry University is a very small liberal arts college with ties to the United Methodist Church. Only about 1,400 students are in attendance at any given time.
As a residential area, this neighborhood is a mixture of single-family homes and apartments. The apartment buildings and complexes tend to be centered around the southern part of the neighborhood, separated from the majority of the single-family properties, and are farther from the university. The area of single-family homes has lots of trees and green space.
Most of the neighborhood does not have sidewalks. This makes it hard for students who may live off campus to walk to the university. Abilene does, however, have an excellent bus system that is easy to use.
Although the focal point of this neighborhood is McMurry University, the neighborhood in an area that is extremely convenient to Dyess Air Force Base. The Dyess Memorial Center is located a half mile from the main gate. Adjacent to that building is a memorial park that features plaques and commemorative bricks, both of which are there permanently. These recognize the heroism and everyday actions of local citizens and military personnel.
Red Bud Park is located just south of the Over Place Area. It features a 2.5-mile walking and jogging trail with exercise stations. It also has picnic tables, a playground, restrooms, and three baseball and four softball practice backstops.
