North East Highway 80 is an Abilene, Texas neighborhood. The borders of North East Highway 80 include Interstate 20 to the south, Jake Roberts Freeway to the east, and East North 10th Street to the north. Railroad tracks just west of Almond Street serves as the neighborhood’s western border.
The areas along Interstate 20 and along North Judge Ely Boulevard serve as the main business centers of this community. Here, residents have restaurants, banks and other services readily at their disposal.
Two parks serve North East Highway 80. Nelson Wilson Park on San Jacinto Drive offers a playground, picnic grounds and a basketball court. Stevenson Park on Cockerell Drive offers similar amenities, along with a swimming pool, a practice backstop and a multi-purpose court.
Adjacent to Stevenson Park is the Woodson Center for Excellence. This is an alternative high school with programs for at-risk students, 15 years of age and older. The graduation rate for this school is a commendable 95 percent, compared to the national rate of 71 percent according to the Alliance for Excellent Education.
A few small lakes and creeks populate North East Highway 80, dividing the residential areas. A majority of the homes and other buildings here were built between 1970 and 1979, with some built before 1949, and others from 1980 to the present. Renters outnumber homeowners in this neighborhood.
North East Highway 80 occupies the northeast quarter of Abilene’s central city, and is two and one-half miles away, nearly within walking distance of downtown.
