It is bounded by U.S. Highway 17/Savannah Highway on the south and Savage Road and State Highway 61/Ashley River Road on the east. The northern and western boundaries area less conspicuous. Interstate 526 runs past the neighborhood on the east. The zip code for Melrose is 29414.

Most of the homes in this suburban neighborhood are small, single-family dwellings, built between 1970 and 1990, but a few historic (pre-1940) homes can be found here, as well as some newer homes. Most of the homes are just one- or two-bedroom complexes, but a few large dwellings are scattered throughout the neighborhood as well. The average home value in Melrose is roughly $240,000. Melrose is considered a somewhat “artsy” neighborhood, with an urban sophisticate population. There are no schools within neighborhood bounds, but the community is served by the Charleston County School District.

Bon Secours – Saint Francis Hospital can be found within neighborhood bounds, offering Melrose residents easy access to health care. Immediately north of this medical center is Ashley Crossing, a neighborhood shopping center that offers a supermarket, Home Depot, bank, and several dining options. There are also several shopping centers just outside of neighborhood bounds to the east, on the other side of I-526. These include the Village Square, Westwood Plaza, The Quadrangle, and Shoppers Port shopping centers. With so many retail areas within a few minutes of home, Melrose residents never need to travel far for their shopping, dining, and entertainment needs.

Although Melrose is situated somewhat inland, residents here are just a short drive away from the peninsula and the Charleston Harbor. The beaches are a popular weekend destination for area residents, offering plenty of opportunities for sunbathing, swimming, water sports, beach games, and other outdoor activities.
