Whether it’s whitewater rafting down the Chattooga River, boating or fishing on Lake Hartwell, or camping and hiking in one of several state parks, Anderson’s ruggedly beautiful surroundings — the foothills of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains – makes this Southern city hard to top. Toss in a gorgeous 16-block downtown historic district and an ideal location, and it’s no wonder Anderson has been nationally recognized as a great place to live.
Anderson’s history began in 1777, when the land was ceded to South Carolina by the Cherokee. Since then, its history is punctuated with several noteworthy events: it was the first city in the nation to have continuous electric power, the first electric cotton gin was built here, and Amelia Earhart once flew into Anderson in 1931.
Today, Anderson’s economy is based in manufacturing. It is perfectly situated between Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina – just a two-hour drive from each. With rolling hills, stunning waterfalls, and beautiful nearby lakes, Anderson continues to draw new residents.
