Glens Falls, NY Apartments for Rent

In 1766, a group of Quakers settled along a waterfall on the Hudson River. Before they arrived, the small settlement had been called “The Corners.” When the Quakers arrived, they changed the name to honor the leader of the group, Abraham Wing. Nobody is sure of the circumstances, but in 1788, Wing had to turn the falls and hamlet over to Colonel Johannes Glen of Schenectady – some say to settle a bet. Glen changed the name to “Glen’s Falls,” which over time became Glens Falls.

Glens Falls is roughly 50 miles north of Albany in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The area contains parks, ski resorts, forests, lakes, providing year-round adventures that include skiing, snowboarding, and sledding in winter to hiking, camping, and boating in summer.

When you choose a Glens Falls apartment to rent, you’ll enjoy living in an area defined by its historical architecture, especially Queen Anne Victorian, Greek Revival, and Second Empire. A Civil War Monument was built in 1872 to honor area men killed in the war. The monument contains 95 names and several war battles. Another great site is the Feeder Canal, which was built in 1820. The Feeder Canal Heritage Trail runs along the canal, popular with walkers, joggers, and cyclists. The canal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is popular for canoeing and kayaking. Cooper’s Cave, located between Glens Falls and the village of South Glens Falls, inspired James Fenimore Cooper’s classic novel, The Last of the Mohicans, and is part of New York State’s historic Independent Trail.

Downtown Glens Falls is a postcard-perfect location, from its historical architecture to its brick-lined streets and sidewalk cafes. Wide sidewalks complete with benches invite shoppers to browse the boutiques, art galleries, and specialty stores. The restaurants, bars, and coffee shops are ideal locations for a quick afternoon snack or an evening out. Downtown also offers a historic walking tour, street festivals, museums, and theaters. The Chapman Historical Museum contains exhibits and hosts events such as the Annual Cemetery Tour.
