Organized in 1881, the Village of Maywood has a long and important history. It was founded by Senator Colonel Nichols and named for his deceased daughter, May. During WW II, Maywood was home to the 33rd Tank Company of the Illinois National Guard (Company B). The famous 192nd Tank Battalion became part of the “Bataan Death March” in April 1942, where only 41 of the 122 men of Company B returned to Maywood alive. Because of their sacrifice, Congress designated Maywood the “Village of Eternal Light.”
Maywood is a terrific location populated with beautiful houses, many listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you’re looking for an apartment to rent in Chicago, or in one of its many suburbs, then Maywood is a terrific option. The village is just 10 miles west of downtown, between the O’Hare and Midway airports. The eastern edge of Maywood borders the Des Plaines River, which contains several spectacular parks, including Thatcher Woods.
