Also known as Chartiers City, the Chartiers neighborhood of Pittsburgh is one of the most popular suburban locations for families in the city. Residents enjoy a safe, easy-going environment that is conveniently located near many of Pittsburgh’s main attractions. Places ranging from the airport to shopping centers and outdoor recreation are located with a few minutes’ drive of Chartiers.
Chartiers is on the western edge of downtown Pittsburgh and is located between the Windgap and Sheraden neighborhoods. It is part of the Pittsburgh City Council District 2 and the 15204 ZIP code. Its boundaries are Chartiers Creek to the north, Ashtola Way to the south, Middletown Road to the west, and Chartiers Avenue and Oetting Street to the east. It is named after Pierre Chartiers, a French fur trapper who first established a trading post at the mouth of Chartiers Creek in 1743.
Visitors to Chartiers find a pleasant, suburban environment, with one-story ranch homes and bungalows featuring plenty of yard space. The area has several parks within its boundaries, boasting some of the best baseball, softball, and soccer fields in Pittsburgh. Residents can take their children to the smaller Chartiers Playground on the west end of the neighborhood or enjoy a relaxing day at the larger McGonigle Park on the east side of the area.
The main geographic landmark in Chartiers is Chartiers Creek, which makes up the neighborhood’s northern boundary. It was named a navigable public waterway by Congress in 1808, and it serves as a major refuge for wildlife in Pittsburgh. Residents often head to Chartiers Creek to engage in water sports, watch for native birds and other animals who live in the area, or simply enjoy a relaxing afternoon with friends and family.
