The beautiful Markham neighborhood is bordered by lush weeping willows and pines. American ranch-style homes sit in close-knit quarters with attached garages or matching detached buildings. Brick walls and picket fences are common features of the houses. There are many apartment homes available as well.
The neighborhood is bordered by Interstate 5 on the southwestern side, SW Spring Garden Street on the north, SW Taylor’s Ferry Road and SW 25th Avenue on the east and SW Maricara Street and the Maricara Natural Area on the southern border.
Though Markham is close to downtown Portland the community retains somewhat of a rural feel. Residents can be seen bird-watching, dog-walking or socializing, or enjoying the trails in nearby Marshall Park. Thickly forested paths lead from Marshall park to the Maricara Natural Area. This forest includes a wetland, and a protected stream. Besides normal park amenities, Marshall Park has hiking trails in a canyon that slants off the Palatine Hills.
Markham House, one of the many apartment complexes available, offers a fun retirement-style community. Residents of Markham House enjoy assisted living with many select freedoms and amenities.
