The neighborhood is pedestrian friendly, and students can walk or ride bicycles to the schools in the area. The Providence Milwaukie Hospital is the nearest health care facility.
Motorists will find easy access to freeways and thoroughfares leading to Portland and other cities. The Tri-Met, Portland’s award-winning public transportation system, covers Lewelling. The neighborhood is minutes from the Portland International Airport and the Amtrak Union Station.
Ball-Michel Park is named after two community activists dedicated to bringing a park to Lewelling. The park, with its playground, trails, and open space, is a continuing project. Ball-Michel Park is the focal point in the neighborhood. Residents gather here for free summertime concerts. It is also the site of the annual neighborhood picnic, where neighbors, city staff, and elected officials are able to meet and socialize in a family friendly atmosphere.
Shopping is available in the neighborhood, but the Clackamas Town Center and the Lloyd Center are malls which attract shopping enthusiasts in the area. Both malls have nationally known anchor stores and retail shops.
At the river wall in Portland’s Waterfront Park, visitors can explore the Oregon Maritime Museum. The museum’s exhibits and displays include ship models, photographs, video collections, and artifacts of Portland and its maritime heritage. Guided tours of the Portland, a steam-powered tugboat, are available.
Visitors can pause for a refreshing break from sightseeing at the Ira Keller Fountain Park. The Ira Keller Fountain covers a city block and is the centerpiece of the park. Named after a longtime civic leader of the Portland Development Commission, the fountain uses 13,000 gallons of water and produces waterfalls, pools, and streamlets each minute.
