The boundaries of the neighborhood are Oswego Lake south and west, South State Street on the east, and railroad tracks on the north. Lakewood is a waterfront community. The streets are quiet; the terrain is hilly; and the landscaping is lush with huge fir trees among the many trees that grace the neighborhood. There are a variety of home styles and sizes. This is a neighborhood that evolved, not one that was planned.

George Rogers Park is a 26-acre park that offers a wide variety of facilities and is located adjacent to the neighborhood. It has two ball fields, two tennis courts, a playground and picnic areas. There is a swimming beach, lots of open space and the option for fishing. The memorial garden and the restored iron smelter are popular with walkers. There are also paths for jogging and biking.

Millennium Plaza City Park in the center of downtown is the site of many community events each year including the Fourth of July Celebration and the European Holiday Market. It is also the weekend location from May-October of the Lake Oswego Farmers Market. On average 80 vendors show up to sell everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to artisan breads and cheeses.

The former Lakewood School has been converted into the Lakewood Center for the Arts. The Lakewood Theatre Company is the main tenant of the building but there are quite a few others including a resale shop whose proceeds help to maintain the building. Live shows are produced on a regular schedule and the center also hosts the annual Festival of Arts.

Lake Oswego Swim Park is located in the neighborhood. This is a seasonal area on the lake open to the public for swimming.
