The King neighborhood has a blend of old and new housing. Homes dating back to the 1900s. Many have wrap-around porches for socializing, take visitors back to an Old Portland environment. Houses and apartments are available in this pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. Students can walk or ride their bikes to elementary, middle, and high schools.
King is close to freeways, the Tri-Met public transportation system, the Portland International Airport, and the Amtrak Union Station.
Portland Community College-Cascade Campus and Concordia University are within commuting distance. The Portland Community College is an accredited community college with degree programs and a transfer program allowing students to enter colleges and universities. Concordia University is a private liberal arts university with 19 undergraduate majors, with concentrations in over 20 fields. Post-graduate degrees are offer by its College of Education and School of Management.
Small parks dot this community, but the largest park in the area is Alberta Park. The 16.7-acre urban oasis provides access for the disabled. It has picnic tables, paths, playground, and playing fields. An off-leash dog area is located in the park.
Nearby Alberta Street, fondly known by locals as the Alberta Arts District, has art galleries, unique shops, restaurants, and enough Portland coffee houses to suit any coffee aficionado. The district, with its supportive art community, has a monthly Last Thursday event where local art establishments showcase their artists.
Patrons of the arts may want to stop for some beer or wine while visiting the district. The Know has live music, beer, and wine seven days a week. Every Day Wine is popular with locals. Over 400 types of reasonably priced bottles of wine are available for browsing or sampling.
