Giant evergreen trees shade the Hilldale neighborhood of Portland, an inviting, friendly community just minutes from downtown. This relaxed, natural setting offers a mix of residential housing, with single-family homes, bungalows, and condominiums set in lush landscaping, often with sizable plots of land. Many on the south side of neighborhood have stunning views of Portland.
The Hillsdale neighborhood was originally settled by German, Italian, and Swiss immigrants who came to farm the area in the 1800s. Hillsdale was a longtime source of dairy and produce for Portland until the area became more residential after World War II. Recent changes to the community in the 1990s have made Hillsdale more pedestrian friendly.
Important green spaces in the Hillsdale community include Dewitt Park, George Himes Park, and Hillsdale Park, which includes a dog park. Many residents take full advantage of nearby Mittleman Jewish Community Center in Hillsdale and the Southwest Community Center in Multnomah, which offers a “Sprout Academy,” an educational preschool with a “green” orientation.
The local Hillsdale Library is very environmentally conscious and is one of the few buildings in the United States with a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Award. The neighborhood is also served by public transportation, in this case the TriMet bus system, with at least 10 routes through Hillsdale.
