With one of the nation’s most prestigious private colleges in the neighborhood, Reed College, Eastmoreland is a lovely area. While home styles and sizes vary, the desirability of the neighborhood remains constant. Near the college homes tend to be quite elegant, overlooking divided, tree-lined boulevards. With exquisitely landscaped lawns, the campus atmosphere blends into the blocks surrounding it. Further south, homes are more modest, a pleasing blend of cottages and bungalows.
With sidewalks, trees and lush landscaping, Eastmoreland also reflects the parks that run along the south and west parts of the area. The boundaries are Southeast Steele Street, Southeast Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard, Tideman Johnson City Park and Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, in zip code 97202.
There are several neighborhood parks. Westmoreland City Park has ponds, walking trails, picnic areas and lots of wide-open spaces. The Eastmoreland Playground is a quiet area along the south part of the neighborhood.
Eastmoreland Golf Course is a beautiful 18-hole course, yet quite affordable. The golf course surrounds Crystal Springs Lake. Two country clubs are a short drive south, Oswego Lake Country Club and Waverly Country Club.
Rhododendron Park, with waterfalls and quaint bridges, draws visitors year-round but the seven-acre park bursts with color when the rhododendrons and azaleas bloom.
A good variety of retail establishments serve the area. Most are found along Cascade Highway. Just east are Fred Meyer, Costco and Wal-Mart. Theaters and value shopping are certainly close by at Eastport Plaza. More upscale stores can be found at Clackamas Town Center, including Nordstrom and Macy’s.
Most restaurants around Eastmoreland tend to be locally owned, though a few franchise eateries are located along Southeast Woodstock Boulevard. A lively entertainment district can be found along Southeast Powell Boulevard and Southeast Holgate Boulevard. Powell’s Bookstore has a branch on Holgate.
