Located southeast of downtown Beaverton, the Denny Whitford neighborhood actually has more open space than city streets. The Redtail Golf Course, on the southern end, takes up about one-third of the community. The slightly hilly course is challenging and family-oriented. As of this writing, plans are underway to build a miniature golf course adjacent to the clubhouse.
Another bit of green is the 12-acre Camille Park along South West Marjorie Lane. This neighborhood gathering place offers tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, trails, playgrounds, and is accessible to the physically-challenged.
Development in Denny Whitford began in the mid-1950s with sprawling homes on large, tree-lined lots. Homes along South West Denny Road, named for an early settler, are more spread out. Streets are curved, with many ending in cul-de-sacs. On the northwest corner is a fairly large mobile home park, complete with clubhouse and swimming pool. Most of the northern end is a commercial zone, with businesses spaced far apart. At South West Allen Boulevard and Southwest Scholls Ferry Road residents will find a combination of fast food and conventional eateries.
McKay Elementary and Whitford Middle School are both within neighborhood borders. Southridge High School is to the southwest, a little over one mile away. The closest houses of worship are the Mission of the Atonement and the Garden Church. Washington Square Mall is just outside the southern border along Route 217. Other points of interest within a three-mile radius are the Portland Golf Club, Tualatin Hills Nature Park, and Greenway Park with its nine-hole disc golf course.
