One of the claims to fame of Bull Mountain, a neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, is the number of golf courses within a few minutes’ drive. The closest is King City Golf Course, sitting on the neighborhood’s southern edge. The nine-hole public course has been open since 1958 and offers some of the least-expensive green fees in the area. Barely one mile farther east is another nine-hole course, the Summerfield Golf Course. Driving another half-mile southeast leads to the very posh, private Tualatin Country Club, founded in 1912. This challenging 18-hole course, designed by Chandler Egan, has greens surrounded by Douglas firs, giving the appearance of playing in the midst of a forest and creating some interesting golf hazards.
Most of the homes in Bull Mountain were built between 1970 and 1994, but there are a few properties that date back to the early 1900s. Development is ongoing. Housing styles range from large two-story, single-family homes to sprawling ranches. Some of the older properties are on very large lots and separated from the neighbors by small groves of trees. Along South West Bull Mountain Road, there is mixture of slightly smaller homes and townhomes in a more suburban setting. These stretch south to South West Beef Bend Road, with some pockets of undeveloped land in between. While walking in the neighborhood is pleasant, the closest public transit is over one-half mile away along Route 99 west, which leads into downtown Portland.
Alberta Rider Elementary School is the only public school inside of Bull Mountain. St James Episcopal, Portland Vineyard, and Christ the King Lutheran Church are all on South West Bull Mountain Road. Bridgeport Village is the closest mall, approximately two miles east. A smaller collection of stores, including an Albertson’s food store, is just east of the King City Golf Course.
