Public and private schools are in walking distance, and the neighborhood is close to freeways and is covered by the TriMet public transportation system of Portland. As Oregon’s second oldest golf course, the Eastmoreland Golf Course began as a dairy before becoming an exclusive, private golf club and course for the Multnomah Athletic Club. Designed by former national golf champion and leading golf architect Chandler Egan, Eastmoreland became Portland’s first public golf course in 1917.
Ardenwald is close to the Tryon Creek State Natural Area. The 645-acre area is a day-use site for outdoor enthusiasts. The .35 Trillium Trail is a paved path designed and developed for visitors of all abilities. Its Nature Center offers park information, educational exhibits, programs, and a gift shop. The Maple Ridge, Center, and Big Fir trails are one-half mile trail loops available throughout the year for hiking. The three-mile bicycle path connects with the 40-mile loop to Portland’s metropolitan bikeway system. Equestrians have two gravel trails for their horses.
Racing fans have a family-friendly venue for drag racing. The Portland International Raceway is the city’s answer to safer street racing. Participants at the drag strip competition and Late Night Drags event follow the guidelines of a street legal event. Runs and grudge racing for maximum speed occur at the racetrack.
Rare parts for classic cars and anything relating to vintage automobiles can be found at the annual Portland International Raceway Swap Meet. As the largest automotive swap meet on the West Coast, the event draws 15,000 visitors who enjoy four days of bargain hunting.
