The Maxwell neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma fills one square mile between downtown Tulsa and the international airport. A varied neighborhood with an old-fashioned style, it has small single-family homes, apartments, mobile home parks and many blocks of homes with a maple tree in nearly every front yard.
Most Maxwell homes have shopping within walking distance. In addition, there are two fine neighborhood parks and an historic library. Most of the lightly-traveled streets are great places for a stroll, with or without a dog.
Pine Avenue is the neighborhood boundary on the north, and East Admiral Place on the south. North Yale Avenue is the boundary on the west and North Sheridan Road on the east. Interstate 244 runs near the southern edge of the neighborhood, providing easy access to travel east and west.
Owen, Bell, and McKinley are Tulsa elementary schools that serve parts of the Maxwell neighborhood. Hamilton and Cleveland are local middle schools and Rogers is the high school for neighborhood children. The Tulsa School District also has many magnet schools, with programs including culinary arts, fine arts, engineering and medicine. The University of Tulsa is less than two miles from the neighborhood.
South of Maxwell the Tulsa Fairgrounds, now also known as Expo Park, hosts the nostalgic State Fair each year. Other events at the Expo include horse shows, flea markets, native American art shows and school graduations.
North of Maxwell is the huge Mohawk Park, with a wildlife interpretive center, a boardwalk across wetlands, and a serene lake. The park has forests to explore, and the wonderful tall-grass prairie. A nature center offers children’s programs that parents will enjoy, as well.
Maxwell is a neighborhood in the heart of town. The community offers a great variety of housing choices, as well as easy access to all the most exciting parts of Tulsa.
