Stockyards City Main Street Apartments for Rent
(hide neighborhood information)Stockyards City Main Street at Exchange Avenue and Agnew Avenue is the best place in Oklahoma City to experience the old Western heritage of the city. The economic driver of the neighborhood is the 100-year-old Oklahoma City National Stockyards, which has been the largest cattle market in the world since 1973. Throughout the 20th century, the Stockyards were one of Oklahoma City’s most important assets, and the Stockyards City Main Street area developed as a way to house and provide services for workers, as well as for traveling cattle traders.
Today, this commercial neighborhood is a great feature for Western enthusiasts and cowboys. Large Western department stores, furniture stores, artisan jewelers, and tack craftsmen are the major businesses. The Rodeo Opry is a renovated historic theater that has weekly shows.
Stockyards City Main Street is also the home of Oklahoma City’s favorite institution, Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, the oldest restaurant in the city. Since 1910, Cattlemen’s has been serving steaks with their famous hospitality. Today, diners are seated at a table under the photograph of a celebrity who has visited Cattlemen’s, a list that includes movie stars, country music singers, and Presidents.
Stockyards City Main Street is a walkable commercial neighborhood that is near the Meridian Avenue Hotel Corridor and adjacent to the Oklahoma River. The biking and jogging trails along the river offer great exercise. Additionally, the Stockyards City Landing allows visitors to board Oklahoma River Cruises that will take them through the locks and dams of the river into downtown and Bricktown. Trolleys and city buses are other methods of eco-friendly public transportation to other parts of the city.
