Prairie dogs have established a colony on the south side of the refuge as well. The animals sometimes draw the attention of red-tailed hawks that canvass the refuge for food.

With its close access to recreation, the Brookhaven West neighborhood is an idyllic location to raise a family. Parents in the community send their children to one of three schools, or Harvest Hills Elementary School, Cooper Middle School, or Putnam City North High School. In addition, residents are in proximity to area shopping and dining.
