Paseo Neighborhood in Oklahoma City, OK

Paseo Neighborhood

Paseo is a mixed-use art district in north Oklahoma City. The main attraction in the neighborhood is Paseo Street, located between Walker Avenue and 30th Street. This area was developed in 1929 as one of the most distant shopping areas outside downtown Oklahoma City. To give his shopping center a unique look, the developer built the buildings with a Spanish Mission style.

Today, the Paseo is on the National Register of Historic Places and all of the colorful stucco, adobe style buildings are full of artists, studios, shops, cafes, restaurants, and galleries.

The Paseo has always been an artistic neighborhood, especially since the 1960s when the neighborhood became one of the best places to find the hippie counterculture and psychedelic music and art in the region. By the 90s, the Paseo was deteriorating like many inner city areas, but in the 2000s the Paseo has joined the rest of central Oklahoma City in a renaissance of urban life. Historic single-family homes and multifamily apartments are being renovated all over the neighborhood, and young, creative people are attracted to the reasonably priced historic buildings.

Because of the mixed uses and high density structure of the neighborhood, it is very walkable. Public transportation, parks, and schools are all found within the area. The neighboring commercial neighborhoods such as the Asian District and Uptown 23rd Street also offer emerging places to eat and shop. The Asian District in particular offers many great restaurants and grocery stores that carry unique items.

The Paseo is also well connected to Midtown and Downtown Oklahoma City, with all the cultural, athletic, and entertainment opportunities of the city core just under two miles away.
