Parmelee is a residential neighborhood of Oklahoma City. The neighborhood is close to the Oklahoma Governor’s Mansion. Built in 1928, the mansion is designed in Dutch-Colonial style, using the same exterior limestone as used for Oklahoma’s State Capitol. The 19 room, 14,000 square foot mansion is the home of current Governor Mary Fallin and her family. Tours of the mansion are available during the week.
Near Parmelee, Frontier City is a Western style amusement park for children, parents and grandparents. Over 75 rides and attractions are built for family friendly fun. Shopping and dining are offered at the park. Frontier City’s Eruption is the tallest thrill ride in Oklahoma. Riders “erupt” over 240 feet into the air before returning to Earth. Before leaving the park, families can dress in Wild West attire and take an old time photograph as the perfect souvenir of the outing.
Will Rogers was a popular celebrity in the 1920s and 1930s. Known as Oklahoma’s favorite son, Rogers was known worldwide as a cowboy, comedian, humorist, and actor. At the Will Rogers Horticultural Gardens, visitors may learn how cacti and succulents grow. The garden has three historic gardens. The Ed Lycan Conservatory has the largest cacti and succulent collection in Oklahoma. The Charles E. Sparks Rose Garden is a formal rose garden on 2 acres. 85 different varieties of roses grow in the rose garden, and it is also used as a test garden for hybrid tea roses. Irises, daylilies and peonies are also grown here. The 10-acre Margaret Annis Boys Arboretum has varieties of trees found in Oklahoma, along with rare species found in the state.
The Will Rogers Garden Exhibition Center is home to the Oklahoma City Council of Garden Clubs. The center is used for educational workshops and classes for the backyard gardener to the expert landscaper.
