It is known as the “City of Festivals.” It is home to the state’s largest university, with about 30,000 students enrolled. And when people talk about the weather, they take it very seriously.

Welcome to Norman, Oklahoma! This is the location of the University of Oklahoma, but this isn’t your typical college town. Norman is about 20 miles south from Downtown Oklahoma City and it is home to more than 118,000 people – making it Oklahoma’s third-largest city. As for the weather, Norman is the location of the National Weather Center, the Storm Prediction Center, and the National Severe Storms Laboratory.

About those festivals … you’ll find a variety to enjoy year-round after you choose your apartment in Norman! There’s the Norman Music Festival, held in April; the Norman Medieval Fair, held in March; the Groovefest, held in September; May Fair, an art festival held in May; Jazz in June; the Chocolate Festival, ranked one of the top three food festivals in America by the Food Network; and the Summer Breeze Concert Series – just to name a few.

Norman has a strong economy. It is the county seat of Cleveland County, and it is home to many large employers including Sysco Corporation, Astellas Pharma Technologies, SouthWest Nano Technologies, SITEL, and Hitachi. The University of Oklahoma is also a major employer and is an important scientific and technological research center. And if you want to buy local, then you’ll want to find an apartment in Norman right away – Norman became a Fair Trade Town in 2010 – the 17th city in the nation to do so.

So, why Norman? The name originated around 1870, when a 23-year-old surveyor named Abner Ernest Norman was hired by the US government to oversee the surveying of the Oklahoma region, which was originally part of the Creek Nation. The Creeks had to cede their region to the US after being accused of aiding the Confederacy during the Civil War. Norman’s work crew burned a sign into a tree as a way of taunting their very young supervisor, designating it “Norman’s Camp.” When the Sooners arrived in 1889, they decided to keep the name.

Despite its unassuming name, this charming city in Oklahoma is a powerhouse – it is the third-largest city in the state, it has the top-ranking school system in Oklahoma, and it is a rapidly-growing, progressive city with a fantastic downtown, a major university, and a variety of festivals held year-round. It’s time to make your home in Oklahoma – it’s time to rent an apartment in Norman.
