If you don’t automatically think “wheat” when someone mentions Enid, Oklahoma, you should. This attractive city is often referred to as the “Wheat Capital” and it contains the Enid Terminal Grain Elevators Historic District, which contains elevators dating back to the late 1920s. At its peak, Enid had a grain storage capacity of about 80,000,000 bushels. Today, it still has the country’s largest grain storage and has the third largest storage capacity in the world.
Situated about an hour north of Oklahoma City and about an hour west of Tulsa, these two large cities are available for weekend shopping trips and entertainment. But Enid, as the county seat of Garfield County and home to Vance Air Force Base, has a stable economy, a charming, historic downtown, over 100 restaurants, and plenty of shopping. The Enid Farmers Market features locally grown produce, crafts, and other items. Enid even contains two wineries that feature tours, gift shops, and wine sampling.
With its Western traditions and history, Enid offers some unique historic sites and museums. The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center features five galleries with historical figures and exhibits and the Humphrey Heritage Village, a living history village containing four historical buildings.
Enid features several parks, including Crosslin Dog Park, Splash Zone Water Park, and the Hoover Park Splash Pad. NASCAR fans will find a home at Enid Speedway, while golfers will appreciate Meadowlake Municipal Golf Course and several country clubs. Nearby lakes and several conveniently-located state parks provide opportunities for camping, hiking, swimming, and fishing.
