When Eugene Barney purchased undeveloped land in Dayton, Ohio near the Miami & Erie Canal in 1843, he had big plans. He erected a complex of six Romanesque and Sullivanesque buildings along Third Street, known as Webster Station, where he provided his industrial tenants with newfangled electricity.

Today this district is called the Cannery. It takes its name from the canning-related activities of Barney’s tenants, who took advantage of the opportunity to process food with electrical power. They included Weakly and Worman, Cincinnati Grocers, William S. Scull Company, Ach, and Canby Company spice mills. Bounded roughly by Keowee Street, Fourth Street, Monument Avenue and Patterson Boulevard, the Cannery is one of nine historic districts in the city.

The industrial buildings are still here, but with the downsizing of industrial jobs in Dayton, many buildings are currently empty. As Dayton, like many other cities in the “rust-belt,” makes the change from an industrial to a service economy, empty buildings are fast becoming trendy lofts and the new retail areas that anchor urban villages.

That is certainly the case with the Cannery. These historic industrial buildings and their turn-of-the-century architecture are the center of Dayton’s new urban renaissance; they have been renovated into a unique development which houses a mix of retail and residential space. Close to riverfront development and downtown Dayton, the Cannery is centrally located between the new baseball stadium and the Oregon entertainment and business District.

Close to downtown, the Webster Station district has easy access to great urban nightlife, restaurants, and all the art and cultural opportunities Downtown Dayton has to offer. The buildings within the development offer security, off-street parking and well-lit outdoor areas.

The buildings also offer access to an exercise gym, a rooftop deck, and proximity to shops such as a top-tier salon, a gallery of contemporary fine arts and a smoke-free café offering specialty appetizers, desserts and cocktails.
