Whetstone Neighborhood in Columbus, OH

Whetstone Neighborhood

Whetstone is located northwest of and is easily accessible from downtown Columbus. High Street defines the neighborhood’s eastern border. It’s bordered on the north by West Weisheimer Road and on the west by the Olentangy River and Beechwold Park just west of the River.

The name Whetstone comes from the early settlers’ name for the Olentangy River. It was called Whetstone River because of the whetstones or shale found along its banks. It was renamed Olentangy in the 1930s.

Located in the 43214 ZIP code, Whetstone is an established neighborhood featuring a variety of home styles. Most homes were built in the late 1930s through the early 1960s. Styles include Cape Cod, Tudor, colonial, and bungalow. Prices range from $130,000 to $350,000. Neighborhood schools include the highly rated Whetstone High School on Scenic Drive. It’s the sort of community where families as well as young professionals and empty nesters can enjoy all the amenities that an older area can provide. Among them are walking, jogging, coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping.

The southern edge of the Whetstone neighborhood is Whetstone Park on North High Street. This park provides a wonderful area for recreation and nature activities. Comprised of 136 acres, it has miles of walking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, sports courts, a casting pond, picnic areas, and fishing in the Olentangy River. It is also the home of the world-famous Park of Roses, which has approximately 11,000 rose bushes and 350 varieties of roses. A Rose Festival is held in mid-June. There are also 13 other gardens, including those devoted to herbs, perennials, and daffodils.

Although Whetstone neighbors can walk and bike to the park, there is plenty of free parking for visitors. A community center and a library branch are located at the edge of the park.
