Widener University - Chester, PA

In 1821, Widener University began as a preparatory school called the Bullock School for Boys. It was located in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1858, it became Delaware Military Academy, and four years later it was moved to Pennsylvania where it was renamed Pennsylvania Military Academy. While it became a college in 1862, it wasn’t until 1972 that Widener University became the private university that it is today.

Widener University averages about 6,400 students and offers eight degree-granting schools, from associate’s degrees to doctoral degrees. Widener University is considered one of the nation’s top universities for civic engagement with 75 percent of Widener students participating in volunteer activities or community service. Service organizations partnered with Widener University include Big Brother/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, and Alpha Phi Omega (a service fraternity).

As part of NCAA Division III, the Widener Pride compete in 20 varsity sports, including basketball, football, lacrosse, soccer, and golf. The football team won the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championship in 2012 for their 17th MAC championship – more than any other team in the conference. The men’s basketball team is also very successful, winning 15 MAC titles and appearing in the NCAA Division III Tournament 17 times.

The main Widener campus is located in Chester, Pennsylvania, a small city just 14 miles southwest of downtown Philadelphia. When looking for a Widener University area apartment, begin in Chester. This historic city was founded by William Penn in 1682, and the William Penn Landing Site marks the spot where Penn first stepped onto Pennsylvania soil.
