Oklahoma State University, also referred to as OSU, is a coeducational public research university located in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Founded in 1890, OSU is the flagship institution of the Oklahoma State University System, and has an enrollment of approximately 35,000 students. OSU is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as having “high research activity.”
Princeton Review ranks Oklahoma State University as one of 120 “Best Western Colleges” for 2011, and as one of 50 “Best Value” public colleges for 2010. US News and World Report ranks the school as 66th among top national public universities, and as number 132 among national universities for 2011. Kiplinger lists OSU among its “100 Best Values in Public Education,” with an in-state ranking of 91st and an out-of-state ranking of 93rd.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys have won 50 national championships, outplaying all but three of the NCAA Division I schools in the US. The school’s homecoming celebration, held annually since 1913, brings more than 40,000 alumni back to campus, and draws over 70,000 participants to the event billed by the university as “America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration.”
Notable alumni include singer and songwriter Garth Brooks; actor Gary Busey; creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip Chester Gould; and corporate tycoon T. Boone Pickens, who has donated over $235 million to the university.
