The University of Toledo, a public university, is one of 13 state universities in Ohio. Also referred to as UT, the school was founded in 1872 and today offers more than 230 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.
In 2006, the school merged with the Medical University of Ohio to form the third-largest public university operating budget in the state. The merger also makes the University one of only 17 public institutions in the country with a school of medicine, law, business, education, pharmacy and engineering.
The Carnegie Foundation classified the university as “Doctoral/Research Extensive.” Researchers at UT work at all levels, from undergraduates to faculty; their combined efforts have led to 125 patents and nearly $60 million in funding and grants.
Some of the university’s nationally-ranked programs include business, engineering, law and occupational therapy. National accolades include a Princeton Review ranking of 18th best in the country for the school’s graduate school of engineering. The school’s medical center is one of 15 major teaching hospitals chosen for the annual “Top 100 Hospitals: Performance Improvement Leaders,” compiled by Modern Healthcare magazine. The university’s College of Law is ranked as a Tier 3 law school by US News and World Report, and the school enjoys the highest first-time passing rate for the bar exam in the state.
The UT student center was the first in the nation to have a water slide. Notable alumni include Fredric J. Baur, inventor of the Pringles can, and Danny Thomas, Hollywood legend and founder of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
