Colgate University, located in the small village of Hamilton about an hour southeast of Syracuse, is a private liberal arts university that was established in 1819. Considered one of the best liberal arts colleges in the US, the university offers 52 undergraduate programs.
The Colgate University campus rests on 515 acres, with another 1,100 acres of undeveloped forest. The beautiful campus contains some outstanding architecture, including the Old Biology Hall, built in 1884 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
With over 25 varsity teams, sports are a big part of Colgate University. The Colgate Raiders participate in NCAA Division I and the football team is part of the Patriot League. In addition to football, teams include basketball, ice hockey, and lacrosse.
An apartment in the Colgate University area will place you in the charming village of Hamilton. The village is highly supportive of Colgate University and its programs, including sports. And while at heart it is a college town, Hamilton features a quaint downtown with plenty of shops and coffee houses. The Palace Theater, also downtown, is a performing arts center operated by the university. Residents of Hamilton enjoy the Towpath Trail, a 5.7-mile hiking trail.
