The first university established in Minnesota, Hamline, is located just southeast of the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Hamline University, situated about hallway between Minneapolis and St. Paul, was established in 1854. This private liberal arts college is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It is a top-ranking regional university and is considered the best of its kind in Minnesota.
The scenic 77-acre, urban campus includes the University Hall-Old Main, an impressive Gothic structure built in 1883 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Students choose from five schools: the College of Liberal Arts, the School of Education, the School of Law, the School of Business, and the Graduate School of Liberal Studies, which offers master’s degrees in three areas.
The HU Pipers participate in NCAA Division III and have several varsity teams, including hockey and basketball. The university’s biggest claim to sports fame is its basketball program, which started in 1895 – the first intercollegiate basketball game in history, making HU the “birthplace of intercollegiate basketball.”
HU is flanked by Minnesota State University and Concordia University, making this area a thriving college town.
