Johns Hopkins University - Baltimore, MD

The goals of Johns Hopkins University, said its president Daniel Coit in 1876, are the advancement of researchers, “who by their excellence will advance the sciences they pursue, and the society where they dwell.” All would agree those goals have been met. Today Johns Hopkins ranks among the world’s top research universities; 33 Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with the university, and its research is among the most cited in the world. The school and its faculty members have won more federal research and development funding than any other university.

Based in Baltimore, Maryland, Johns Hopkins also has campuses in Washington, DC, Italy, China and Singapore. The university is named for its benefactor, Johns Hopkins, whose first name “Johns” is still a source of confusion; it was the surname of his grandmother, Margaret Johns.

In 2011 three Johns Hopkins faculty members, who study robotics, biostatistics and international health, were among 94 researchers selected to receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the US government’s highest honor for scientists and engineers whose early accomplishments show great promise.

Recent research at Johns Hopkins University has led to discovery that a version of the Atkins diet reliably cuts seizures in adults with epilepsy, that adult male circumcision significantly reduces a man’s risk of acquiring HIV, and information needed to develop a prototype for the first fully-integrated prosthetic arm.

Notable alumni include Vice President Spiro T. Agnew; Secretary of State Madeleine Albright; New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; Soviet spy Alger Hiss; President Woodrow Wilson; singer Tori Amos; actor John Astin, who portrayed Gomez in The Addams Family; news anchor Wolf Blitzer; author and environmentalist Rachel Carson, and feminist Gertrude Stein.
