The University of Louisville is a state-supported research university located in Kentucky’s largest metropolitan area. The university has a student enrollment of 22,000 and offers graduate, professional, baccalaureate and associate degrees in over 170 fields of study.

The school’s three campuses are the 287-acre Belknap Campus, three miles from downtown Louisville. This campus houses seven of the university’s 11 colleges and schools. The Health Sciences Center is in downtown Louisville’s medical complex, and houses the university’s health-related programs and the University of Louisville Hospital. The 243-acre Shelby Campus is located in eastern Jefferson County.

The University of Louisville is mandated by the Kentucky General Assembly to be a “Preeminent Metropolitan Research University,” and it has participated in important medical breakthroughs including the development of a highly-effective vaccine against cervical cancer in 2006, the first fully self-contained artificial heart transplant surgery, the first successful hand transplantation and the development of the Pap smear test. Since 1999, the university has made the largest gains of any school ranked by the NIH, with its funding increasing 277 percent and its rank increasing 30 places.

Notable alumni include Harriett Simpson Arnow, author of “The Dollmaker;” Bob Edwards, former host of NPR “Morning Edition” and current host of The Bob Edwards Show; Diane Sawyer, co-host of “Good Morning America;” David A. Jones, co-founder and former CEO of Humana Healthcare; Robert Nardelli, CEO of Chrysler, former CEO of the Home Depot; Mitch McConnell, current U.S. Senator and Minority Leader; and Johnny Unitas, three-time NFL Most Valuable Player and one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
