Kansas State University, more commonly referred to as K-State, is a university located in Manhattan, Kansas. Founded in 1863, it is the oldest public university in the state of Kansas, with a student population of almost 24,000. The Princeton Review ranked the school among “The Best 373 Colleges” in 2011.
K-State ranks first nationally among state universities in its total of Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater and Udall scholars in the last 25 years, earning K-State a place among the nation’s elite universities.
The university is now working to become a top 50 public research university by 2025, and has already been classified as a “high-research university” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The laser which makes LASIK eye surgery possible is a technology developed by Kansas State researchers.
Holtz Hall, built in 1876, is the oldest free-standing building on campus. The signature building at Kansas State University, Anderson Hall, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has housed the university’s administrative offices for more than a century.
Famous alumni include Earl Woods, father of golfer Tiger Woods; Gordon Jump, actor who played the Maytag man;” Erin Brockovich, environmental activist whose story was featured in a movie; Kirstie Alley, Emmy-winning actress; Marlin Fitzwater, the only press secretary to serve two US presidents, Reagan and Bush; and General Richard Myers, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest ranking military official in the nation.
