University of Georgia - Athens, GA

The University of Athens (UGA) is located in Athens, Georgia about 60 miles from Atlanta. The university was founded in 1785 and was the first chartered state-supported university in the country. UGA contains 388 buildings across 615 acres and has one of the best research libraries in the nation.

Athens is the quintessential college town with walkable streets, sidewalk cafes, and funky shops. It is home of the Bulldogs and fans are located state-wide. During football season, Athens comes alive from tailgating at Sanford Stadium, the seventh largest stadium in the NCAA, to crowds at sports bars. This pedestrian-friendly town also contains art galleries, museums, theaters, and book stores.

Music is a part of the fabric of Athens – nightlife includes everything from local bands in bars to street musicians to major concerts. Several major rock bands started out in Athens, including the B52s, R.E.M, and Widespread Panic. Several music venues have become world-famous, such as the 40-Watt Club.

As a historic city, Athens has several landmarks, including the Athens Welcome Center, located in the Church-Waddel-Brumby House, which dates to 1820. Several buildings on the UGA campus are included in the walking tours as historic sites. The beautiful downtown is also a historic district, and 14 other neighborhoods are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
