University of Miami UHealth - Miller Medical Campus - Coral Gables, FL

It could be enough for some students to attend the same school as Gloria Estefan or Sylvester Stallone; but students at the University of Miami are also part of an institution that is restoring sight tp the blind.

Informally referred to as UM, this private, non-sectarian research university founded in 1925 was ranked by US News and World Report as number 38 in the publication’s “Best Colleges” listings.

The school receives $326 million per year in sponsored research grants, placing the school 14th in the country among private research universities. The majority of the funding is for medical research.

The university’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute was ranked the number one hospital in the country for ophthalmology in the annual survey of “America’s Best Hospitals,” published in US News and World Report. In the first such operation in the United States, surgeons implanted a tooth in a 60-year-old blind woman’s eye, using it to anchor an artificial cornea that has restored the vision of the patient, who had been blind for nine years due to a rare skin condition that destroys the cells on the surface of the eye.

The university enrolls 15,629 students in 12 separate colleges, and offers 115 undergraduate, 114 graduate, 51 doctoral, and two professional areas of study. Alumni include a surprising number of notable musicians, including Ben Folds, pianist and founder of the Ben Folds Five; Bruce Hornsby, jazz musician and Grammy Award winner; Enrique Iglesias, singer, songwriter and Grammy Award winner; Pat Metheny, jazz guitarist and founder of the Pat Metheny Group; Grace Slick, singer and songwriter for Jefferson Airplane and Ed Toth, drummer for the Doobie Brothers.
